AC Broke During a Heat Wave? 6 Safe Steps

Your AC Broke in a Heat Wave: 6 Things to Do Right Now

It always happens on the hottest day. The house in Jackson starts climbing, the vents are blowing warm, and every HVAC company in the county is booked. Before you do anything else, know this: the priority is keeping the people in your home safe, and the repair is second. Here is what to do in order.

1. Check the Three Things That Are Not a Breakdown

A surprising number of heat-wave calls are not failures. Take ninety seconds and check the thermostat is set to COOL and the fan to AUTO, check the breaker for the outdoor unit has not tripped, and check the filter is not completely blocked. A tripped breaker that immediately trips again is a real problem, so do not keep resetting it. Our guides on AC blowing warm air and AC is not cooling cover the rest of the quick checks.

2. Shut the System Off If It Is Frozen

If you see ice on the refrigerant lines or the indoor coil, turn the cooling off and set the fan to ON to thaw it. Running a frozen system can destroy the compressor and turn a repair into a replacement. Full instructions are in AC freezing up.

3. Keep the Heat Out

Close blinds and curtains on every window getting direct sun, especially west-facing ones in the afternoon. Avoid the oven, the dryer and the dishwasher until evening, since each one dumps heat and humidity into the house. Open windows only once the outdoor temperature drops below the indoor temperature, usually late evening.

4. Move Air Across People

Fans do not lower room temperature, but moving air across skin makes a real difference to how hot you feel. Set up fans where people actually are. A box fan in a window at night, pointed outward on the leeward side of the house, pulls hot air out and helps flush the heat that built up all day.

5. Watch for Heat Illness, Especially in the Vulnerable

This is the part that matters more than the repair. Infants, adults over 65, people with heart or respiratory conditions and pets are at real risk when indoor temperatures climb. Drink water before you feel thirsty. Watch for heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, cramps or a rapid pulse.

Skin that is hot, red and dry with no sweating, confusion, or fainting is heat stroke, and that is a medical emergency. Call 911 immediately, move the person somewhere cooler and cool them with wet cloths while you wait. The CDC has clear guidance on recognizing heat illness that is worth reading before you need it.

If your home is not cooling down, do not tough it out. Spend the afternoon somewhere air conditioned, a library, a mall, a cooling center or a friend’s house, and check on elderly neighbors while you are at it.

6. Call for Service and Give Good Information

When you call, having a few details ready moves you up the queue and helps us arrive with the right part. Tell us whether the outdoor unit is running, whether the indoor fan is blowing, whether there is ice anywhere, whether the breaker tripped, and any sounds or smells you noticed before it quit. Descriptions from strange AC noises are genuinely useful to a dispatcher.

How to Not Be in This Position Next Summer

Almost every heat-wave emergency we respond to was preventable, and the warning signs were there in May. A spring summer AC maintenance visit catches the failing capacitor, the low charge and the clogged drain before July finds them for you. Customers on a maintenance plan also get priority scheduling, which is worth more than the discount on the day everyone calls at once. And if your system is already showing the signs your AC is failing, it is better to have the replacement conversation in April than during a heat advisory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it safe to keep running the AC if it is barely cooling?

If there is no ice, no burning smell and no unusual noise, running it while you wait is generally fine and better than nothing. If you see ice, smell something burning, or the breaker keeps tripping, shut it off and wait for a technician.

What indoor temperature is actually dangerous?

Risk rises quickly above about 90°F indoors, and sooner for infants, older adults, people with chronic conditions and pets. Humidity makes it worse because sweat cannot evaporate. If your home is climbing into that range and will not come down, relocate for the afternoon.
